The NextGen Precision Health Discovery Series provides learning opportunities for UM System faculty and staff across disciplines, the statewide community and our other partners to learn about the scope of precision health research and identify potential collaborative opportunities. The series consists of monthly lectures geared toward a broad multidisciplinary audience so all can participate and appreciate the spectrum of precision health efforts.

"Overcoming Challenges of Using Swine Models for Neurodegenerative Diseases"

Description
Swine models closely recapitulate clinical signs and symptoms, therefore serving as an ideal preclinical model for many diseases also found in humans. By utilizing genetic modification, these swine models mirror clinical conditions. However, as a large animal species, unique challenges emerge as the animal models are used for research. The seminar will illustrate strategies to establish swine models by utilizing genome editing systems and discuss models that represent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø¿ª½± the Speaker
Kiho Lee graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences. He received his master’s and PhD from Purdue University, and post-doc training from the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø¿ª½±-Columbia. While at the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø¿ª½±, he generated immune-deficient pigs that could support growth and proliferation of human induced pluripotent stem cells. He is currently an associate professor in the Division of Animal Sciences at the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø¿ª½±. Dr. Lee’s lab currently focuses on designing genetically engineered large animal models for agriculture and biomedicine.
